People often express their feelings and beliefs through art, music, poetry, story, drama and physical movement – both creating and observing/performing. These creative forms of expression also play important roles in most religions and cultures.

How do people express their deepest experiences and beliefs? | i. self-expression through the arts is a shared human experience among all human beings, religious or not ii. feelings, beliefs and values can be expressed in a variety of literary and artistic forms iii. there is a variety of ways in which such forms can be interpreted. | i. We suggest starting a unit with a question or resource that will focus pupils’ attention onto the BI. e.g, Taking ‘love’ as a powerful universal emotion, show/discuss a painting, poem or song expressing love. Give pupils copies of a shortlist of songs/hymns which a couple is using to choose music for their wedding. Which ones would you choose? Could use a different feeling – fear, friendship … introduce the idea of self-expression through the arts. What does that mean? E.g.some people create art; we can also express ourselves through the art of another person. E.g. ask pupils why they listen to music- is there any music that affects them in particular ways. Supposing they were to choose a track ( or a poem/picture for a special occasion – mum or dad’s birthday. What might they choose that would tell the person what they mean to you n.b.it doesn’t have to be serious. ii. Expand on the introduction – goof examples – e.g. clip from Billy Elliot (movie) where Billy expresses his anger through extempore dance (check copyright). Find examples of religious experiences expressed through the arts e.g. John Bunyan; Charles ; Wesley ; Murtis; Indian dance. |
